What the numbers say
- India imports roughly 57% of its edible oil, making it one of the world's largest vegetable-oil buyers; palm oil is about 59% of the shipments.
- Imports eased ~3% to 15.96 million tonnes in 2023-24 on higher domestic oilseed output; the import bill was about ₹1.32 lakh crore.
- In 2024-25 volume stayed near 16 MT but the bill rose ~22% to about ₹1.61 lakh crore as global prices climbed.
