Ghee Price in India per kg: Amul, Patanjali and More
A dated price table read from each brand's own online shop, what makes one litre cost four times another, and why a litre of ghee is not a kilo.

The short answer
On 21 October 2026, a 1 litre pack of branded cow ghee in India had an MRP of ₹669 to ₹1,841 on the brands' own online shops: Vita and Amul at the low end (₹669–765), Patanjali ₹835, Katraj ₹850–875, Country Delight about ₹1,000 a litre, and Organic India ₹1,841. A2, Gir and bilona cow ghee cost ₹1,400 to ₹3,600 a litre. Buffalo ghee was ₹680 (Amul) to ₹900 a litre (Katraj). Brands sell ghee by volume, and a litre weighs less than a kilo. Nandini, Mother Dairy and Heritage showed no price on their own sites.

What 1 litre of ghee costs, in one paragraph
A 1 litre pack of branded cow ghee cost between ₹669 and ₹1,841 on 21 October 2026, going by the MRPs on the brands' own online shops. The lowest per litre was Vita cow ghee, poly pack (₹669 for 1 L pouch); the highest was Organic India Organic Cow Ghee (₹1,841). The middle of the 9 cow ghee packs we read was about ₹835 a litre. A2 and Gir cow ghee ran from ₹1,400 to ₹3,600 a litre.
Prices are MRPs (or the single price the shop shows) read on 21 October 2026 from each brand's own website, not from Amazon, Flipkart or quick-commerce apps. They are not a live rate. Shops and apps often sell below MRP, and MRPs change. IndianAgri does not sell ghee and was not paid by any brand listed.

₹ per litre is worked out from the pack size and price, nothing else. Amul's prices were shown after choosing a Delhi delivery pin code (110001); other cities may differ.
Brands whose own site showed no price that day: Nandini (KMF) (catalogue only, with a bulk-order form); Mother Dairy (catalogue only, no shop); Heritage (lists pack sizes and sends buyers to retail apps); Gowardhan (lists pack sizes and links to a retailer); Milma (product descriptions only); Aavin (no ghee price on the product pages); Paras (a price with no pack size, so we could not use it); Saras, Verka, GRB, Madhusudan (we found no working own shop with a price). We leave them out rather than borrow a retailer's figure.

Why the gap
Why one litre costs ₹659 at one brand and ₹3,600 at another
The table itself shows four things that move the price.
- Which milk. Ordinary cow ghee sat around ₹835 a litre. Ghee sold as A2, Gir cow or bilona-made cost from ₹1,400 to ₹3,600 a litre, two to five times as much. Buffalo ghee was not dearer than cow ghee at the same brand: Amul's buffalo ghee (₹680) was below its cow ghee (₹705).
- Who makes it. The three dairy co-operatives with prices on their own shops (Amul, Vita, Katraj) priced 1 litre of cow ghee between ₹669 and ₹875. Private and organic brands sat higher.
- Organic or not. Organic India's certified-organic cow ghee had the highest MRP among the cow ghee packs, ₹1,841 a litre, though its shop offered it at ₹1,699.
- The pack. The same ghee costs a little more in a jar than in a pouch: Katraj's 1 litre jar was ₹875 against ₹850 for the pouch, and Vita's ₹679 against ₹669. Small packs cost more per litre: Amul's 500 mL Gir cow ghee works out to ₹1,400 a litre.
Why A2 or bilona ghee is priced so high is the seller's own case to make; this page only records the prices. For the cattle behind it, read our piece on India's indigenous cattle and climate-resilient dairy.
Litre or kilo?
Is 1 litre of ghee the same as 1 kg?
No. Most people search for the price of "1 kg ghee", but every brand in our table sells ghee by volume: 200 mL, 500 mL, 1 litre, 15 litre tins. Ghee is fat, and fat is lighter than water, so a litre of ghee weighs less than a kilo. How much less depends on the ghee and its temperature, and we have not found an official figure we are willing to print. So this page compares ghee per litre, as it is sold, and does not convert.
What this means for you: when a seller quotes a price "per kg", ask whether it is by weight or for a 1 litre pack. The two are not the same quantity, and a per-kg price will look higher than the per-litre MRP of the same ghee.
The bigger picture
India's milk, in numbers
All ghee starts as milk, and India makes more milk than any other country. According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying's Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025, India produced 247.87 million tonnes of milk in 2024-25, up 3.58% from 239.30 million tonnes in 2023-24. Milk available per person rose to 485 grams a day, from 319 grams in 2014-15.
Five states produce more than half of it: Uttar Pradesh (15.66%), Rajasthan (14.82%), Madhya Pradesh (9.12%), Gujarat (7.78%) and Maharashtra (6.71%), together 54.09% (PIB release, 26 November 2025). Three of the brands in our table belong to milk co-operatives in those states: Amul (Gujarat), Katraj (Pune, Maharashtra) and, next door, Vita (Haryana).
The statistics do not give a figure for how much of that milk becomes ghee, so we do not quote one.
For business buyers
Buying in bulk, for a business, or as powder?
Buying for a bakery, sweet shop or food factory? Retail jars are the wrong unit. Ghee for business comes in 15 litre tins or bulk, and some food makers now use it dried, as a powder that mixes into dry premixes. Our sister site explains ghee powder: what it is, how it is made and how to get quotes from Indian makers.
Thinking of making ghee yourself? Our machinery site's guide to the ghee making machine walks through the whole line, from cream or butter to filled jars, and what to ask the makers.

Why it matters
Ghee is one of the most searched food prices in India, yet most answers are a single brand's shop page or a marketplace listing. A dated, sourced comparison lets a household see what the spread really is, and lets a shop, caterer or food maker see where co-operative, private and A2 brands sit before buying in bulk.
Frequently asked
What is the price of 1 kg ghee in India?
Brands sell ghee by the litre, not the kilo. On 21 October 2026, a 1 litre pack of branded cow ghee had an MRP of ₹669 to ₹1,841 on the brands' own shops, with most co-operative brands between ₹669 and ₹875. A litre of ghee weighs less than a kilo, so a true per-kg price is higher than the per-litre MRP.
Which branded ghee had the lowest MRP?
Of the packs we read on 21 October 2026, the lowest per litre was Vita's 1 litre ghee pouch at ₹659 (the pack name does not say which milk). For packs labelled cow ghee, the lowest was Vita's 1 litre pouch at ₹669, then Vita's jar at ₹679 and Amul Cow Ghee at ₹705. Shops and apps often sell below MRP.
Why is A2 ghee so costly?
A2, Gir cow and bilona ghee were priced at ₹1,400 to ₹3,600 a litre on 21 October 2026, against about ₹835 for ordinary cow ghee. Sellers price them as premium products from specific breeds or methods; IndianAgri records the prices and makes no health claim for either.
Is 1 litre of ghee equal to 1 kg?
No. Ghee is lighter than water, so 1 litre of ghee weighs less than 1 kg. Brands sell by volume (mL and litres), so compare prices per litre, and ask any seller quoting "per kg" whether the price is by weight.
Is cow ghee costlier than buffalo ghee?
Not at the brands we read. Amul's 1 litre buffalo ghee MRP was ₹680 against ₹705 for its cow ghee (21 October 2026). Katraj's buffalo ghee works out to ₹900 a litre in a 500 mL pouch, against ₹850 for its 1 litre cow ghee pouch, but the pack sizes differ.
How often do ghee prices change?
Brands revise MRPs from time to time, for example after milk procurement prices or GST rates change. This table was read on 21 October 2026; we re-read it every month and show the date of the last reading next to the table.
What is the price of Amul ghee 1 litre?
On Amul's own shop on 21 October 2026 (Delhi pin code), Amul Pure Ghee 1 L had an MRP of ₹700, Amul Cow Ghee 1 L ₹705, Amul High Aroma Cow Ghee 1 L ₹765, Amul Buffalo Ghee 1 L ₹680, and Amul Gir Cow Ghee 500 mL ₹700.
How much milk does India produce?
247.87 million tonnes in 2024-25, up 3.58% from 239.30 million tonnes in 2023-24, according to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying's Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025. India ranks first in the world.

Every price in this article was read by IndianAgri on 21 October 2026 from the brand's own website (links in the table and in Sources); none comes from a marketplace or quick-commerce app. "MRP" is the price the shop labels MRP or strikes through; where the shop shows one price with no label, that is marked. Amul's prices were shown for a Delhi pin code. ₹ per litre is computed from pack size and price. We did not convert litres to kilograms. Brands whose own site showed no price are named and left out. Milk figures are from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying's Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025 (PIB, 26 November 2025).
