870 Species, 2,439 Hectares: Why India Still Buys Its Orchids from Thailand
The species count gets quoted at every conference. The cultivated area does not. Set the two side by side and the North East's orchid story stops being about biodiversity and starts being about a cold chain that was never built.

The short answer
North East India holds roughly 870 orchid species in 159 genera — about 72.8% of India's total — yet India's entire commercial orchid area in the 2024-25 Final Estimates is 2,439 hectares, of which 2,278 ha are in the North East and 2,111 ha in Meghalaya alone. The gap
870 species, 2,439 hectares
North East India holds about 870 orchid species across 159 genera — roughly 72.8% of every orchid species recorded in India, on a little over 7% of its land. It is one of the densest concentrations of orchid diversity anywhere in the world, and it is the fact that every presentation on the region's horticultural potential opens with.
Set it against what is actually farmed. In the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare's Final Estimates for 2024-25, India's entire commercial orchid area is 2,439 hectares. Not 2,439 hectares in the North East — 2,439 hectares in the country. It is smaller than the area a single mid-sized sugarcane village occupies, and it has barely moved from the 2,411 hectares reported the year before.
Meanwhile Thailand supplies a little over 80% of the orchid cut flowers India imports, with the Netherlands taking most of the rest. A country holding three-quarters of its own orchid biodiversity in one region buys its orchid blooms from a country with a fraction of the species and a great deal more glasshouse.
The map
One state is carrying almost all of it
Read the workbook state by state and the concentration is stark. Of India's 2,439 hectares under orchids, 2,278 are in the North East — 93.4%. That part matches the biodiversity story. What does not is where inside the region it sits: Meghalaya alone accounts for 2,111 hectares, or 86.6% of the national total. Every other state in India, North East included, splits the remaining 328.
The mismatch inside those numbers is the story. Arunachal Pradesh has more orchid species than any other Indian state — 622 of them — and records no commercial orchid area at all. Sikkim, which has 543 species and has hosted India's National Research Centre for Orchids since 1996, grows 38 hectares. Nagaland manages 102, Mizoram 15, Tripura 12. Outside the region, Madhya Pradesh (71 ha) grows more orchids than any North Eastern state except Meghalaya and Nagaland.
So the region's commercial orchid sector is not small and evenly spread. It is one state, and essentially one supply base, standing in for a resource that is spread across eight.
The reason
A cut-flower trade does not run on wild species
The instinctive reading — that 870 species should convert into 870 products — is the wrong model, and it is worth being precise about why.
The global cut-flower trade does not want variety. It wants a stem of predictable length, colour and vase life, available in the same specification every week of the year, in volumes an importer can contract against. That is a manufacturing problem, and it is solved with a handful of standardised hybrid lines — Dendrobium, Mokara, Phalaenopsis, Vanda — mass-propagated in tissue culture and grown under controlled conditions. Thailand's position rests on exactly that, not on having the richer flora.
There is also a legal floor under this. Every orchid is listed under CITES: the whole family sits in Appendix II, with the most threatened genera in Appendix I. International trade in wild-collected plants is therefore restricted by default, and the trade that does move legally moves as artificially propagated material — nursery-raised hybrids, which carry specific exemptions. A wild species growing on a Meghalaya hillside is not an export product. It is germplasm, and it only becomes a product after somebody breeds from it, propagates it and grows it to a specification.
What exists
The research has been in place for thirty years
This is not a case of a gap nobody noticed. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research established the National Research Centre for Orchids at Pakyong, Sikkim, on 5 October 1996, with an explicit mandate covering productivity, quality and the commercialisation of orchids. It maintains a working collection running to roughly 90 genera plus commercial hybrids, and the micropropagation techniques the trade depends on are not exotic — they are standard, published and taught.
What has not been built is everything downstream of the plant. A cut orchid is a perishable that has to be graded, sleeved, boxed, pre-cooled and moved under temperature control to an airport with capacity, on a schedule an importer can rely on. The North East's constraint is that chain, not its germplasm and not its science — which is the same constraint that leaves the region's fruit surplus unprocessed and its milk under-collected. Orchids simply make it legible, because a flower cannot wait for a road.
What would change it
The bottleneck sits after the flower is cut
Judged honestly, the near-term opportunity is probably not the export market Thailand already holds. It is the domestic one. India's own demand for cut flowers has grown with urban weddings, hospitality and events, and a supplier three flying hours from Delhi has an advantage over one in Bangkok only if the cold chain exists to convert it.
Three things are worth watching. Whether commercial orchid area moves outside Meghalaya at all — Arunachal's 622 species and zero hectares is the single largest unclaimed position in Indian floriculture. Whether tissue-culture capacity reaches growers as planting material they can actually buy, rather than as a technique demonstrated at an institute. And whether pre-cooling and packhouse infrastructure appears at Guwahati, Shillong and Imphal, because without it every other investment in this crop is stranded.
The species count is the least useful number in this story. It has been quoted for thirty years and has never, by itself, sold a stem. The 2,439 hectares is the number that would have to move.
Why it matters
The North East's agricultural potential is almost always presented as an inventory of what grows there. Orchids are the cleanest test of whether that framing means anything, because the resource is exceptional, the research centre has existed since 1996, and the cultivated area is still small enough to fit inside a single tehsil. The binding constraint is not diversity, science or demand. It is grading, pre-cooling and airfreight — the same missing links that strand the region's fruit surplus and its milk, and the reason a species count has never by itself sold a stem.

Can wild orchids from the Northeast be legally sold or exported?
