What the numbers say
- India is the world's largest producer, consumer and importer of pulses.
- Production peaked near 27.3 MT in 2021-22, then eased to about 24.5 MT in 2023-24 (Third Advance Estimate) on unfavourable weather — widening the import gap.
- Gram (chana), tur/arhar and urad are the main pulses grown.
