What the numbers say

  • India's foodgrain output has risen for four straight years, from 297.5 MT in 2019-20 to 332.3 MT in 2023-24 — a gain of roughly 12%.
  • Rice and wheat together account for the bulk of the total; rice alone crossed 137 MT in 2023-24.
  • The steady climb reflects both expanded area and yield gains, though year-to-year moves track the monsoon closely.
