What the numbers say
- India is the world's largest rice exporter, accounting for roughly a third to two-fifths of the global rice trade.
- Rice exports climbed to a record 22.35 million tonnes in 2022-23 before export restrictions — including the July 2023 ban on non-basmati white rice — pulled 2023-24 down to 16.36 million tonnes (11.12 MT non-basmati + 5.24 MT basmati).
- The swing shows how sensitive global rice availability is to Indian policy, given the country's dominant share.
