What the numbers say
- India is the world's largest rice exporter, accounting for roughly a third to two-fifths of the global rice trade.
- Export restrictions — including the July 2023 ban on non-basmati white rice — cut 2023-24 shipments to 16.36 million tonnes from a record 22.35 MT the year before.
- With those curbs lifted, 2024-25 rebounded 23.4% to 20.2 million tonnes — a swing that shows how sensitive global rice availability is to Indian policy.
