What the numbers say

  • The southwest monsoon delivers roughly three-quarters of India's annual rainfall, so its strength shapes kharif sowing, reservoir levels, and rural demand.
  • IMD treats 96–104% of the LPA as a 'normal' monsoon. 2023 came in below normal at 94% (an El Niño year); 2024 rebounded to an above-normal 108%.
  • Even a 'normal' national figure can mask sharp regional and weekly deficits, which is what actually determines local crop outcomes.
