Values are the all-India seasonal total as a percentage of the Long Period Average (the 1971–2020 mean, about 87 cm). 100% = exactly average; below 96% is 'below normal', above 104% is 'above normal'.
What the numbers say
- The southwest monsoon delivers roughly three-quarters of India's annual rainfall, so its strength shapes kharif sowing, reservoir levels, and rural demand.
- IMD treats 96–104% of the LPA as a 'normal' monsoon. 2023 came in below normal at 94% (an El Niño year); 2024 and 2025 were both above normal at 108%.
- Even a 'normal' national figure can mask sharp regional and weekly deficits, which is what actually determines local crop outcomes.
